Week 2 - Day 1

So for Monday of June 8, 2015, the goal was to look into what Nagios does for Projector monitoring. Once again a problem came up, that problem would be that there isn't a Nagios procedure for projector monitoring. There are printer monitoring, Windows PC monitoring, Linux PC monitoring, IOS PC monitoring, server monitoring, etc. However, there isn't a monitoring system for what we need. Once again there is a bump on the road. After looking for a significant amount of time, I just gave up for the day. Instead I just upgrade the version of Nagios on the OVM from Nagios 4.0.1 to 4.0.8. There's pictures if anyone is interested.

End of Week 1

So far for week one, it is safe to say that progress was made.

There was an OVM created to install Nagios Core onto it, and plug ins would be added for each specific task that it would be required to do. There was some confusion with the installation of Nagios Core at first, but with some help from Tom, I was able to install it. As stated from the previous post, there was a problem with accessing the web interface of Nagios once it was installed on the OVM, and it was indeed a firewall problem. The issue was fixed on Friday (June 5th 2015) and I was able to successfully able to access the Nagios Web interface.

The week one milestone can be said to be a success, and now the milestone for week 2 would be adding one projector onto the Nagios System to test it out. The projector in the Intern Room (RLC 102A) is a perfect candidate since it's already connected to the network via Ethernet, so it should give off an I.P. address. However, before going forward, there needs to be a decision about if the Department will be going with a paid version of Nagios, which already comes with an OVM with everything you would need. The paid edition also solves the issue of the annoying process of setting a Nagios system to do exactly what it is supposed to do.

Stay tuned for the next post to be updated about the process of the project for this internship with Manhattan College's ITS Department.

Week 1 -Day 4

So far for today, I started taking an on line course on how to better understand and use Linux. It was a course of efx, and was free, so why not?

I started going into the lecture that consisted of slide shows and videos, however after the first lesson, it got a bit boring and long. So I decided to call it a day for the learning from efx.

I then opened up terminal and started going into my OVM since it was set up yesterday. Got a lot more used to it then I was yesterday and looked up a lot for certain codes to be typed/ copied onto terminal. I started off initially installing Nagios on the OVM via terminal and it was fine up to a point. I followed a link that showed step by step installation for installing Nagios Core and then adding plug-ins. The link was:

http://www.tecmint.com/install-nagios-in-linux/

I had first gotten stuck on step 3, which was: Download Nagios Core 4.0.1 and Nagios Plugin 1.5.

Eventually I gave up trying to do it and looked more towards installing X11 forwarding, which I assumed to be the GUI which would basically make it no more codes and just make it into clicking and dragging. Tom had told me that my problem was that I didn't believe that the world of Linux Servers is mainly just codes. Sadly, he is right.

Eventually I basically gave up and Tom had to help me. The problem with installing the Core of Nagios was only a dash, because the version of Linux running on the desktop that I am using doesn't use a dash for that certain command in Terminal. Who would have thought that only a dash would make that much of a difference.

Once the part three was solved, the rest was just a breeze.
Just because it was a breeze doesn't mean there wasn't a problem at the end. After completing the installation, the error that occurred was connecting to the Nagios Web interface. Long story short, the assumed problem was due to a firewall issue. The official answer will be answered in the next post.... or not... who knows.

So far, this was good progress. In a weird way I actually enjoyed it, even though it was a  bit annoying. Stay tuned for the next post.

ENJOY!!

Week 1 Days 1-3

Its the third day of the intern ship for ITS, and so far its been much better today than compared to the first day.

For the first and second day, the highlights were basically installing Oracle Linux  and looking up Nagios and other similar monitoring systems.

Today, Tom set me up with a OVM and it was pretty cool seeing how it was set up. On top of that, I did some coding on the terminal. Nothing serious, but it was pretty nice seeing how Linux functions, and I understood why a lot of people use it and why it uses much less space than Windows.

There's a lot more to learn, but the spark for interest came today. Time to learn how to use LINUX without the GUI!!
