So far for today, I started taking an on line course on how to better understand and use Linux. It was a course of efx, and was free, so why not?
I started going into the lecture that consisted of slide shows and videos, however after the first lesson, it got a bit boring and long. So I decided to call it a day for the learning from efx.
I then opened up terminal and started going into my OVM since it was set up yesterday. Got a lot more used to it then I was yesterday and looked up a lot for certain codes to be typed/ copied onto terminal. I started off initially installing Nagios on the OVM via terminal and it was fine up to a point. I followed a link that showed step by step installation for installing Nagios Core and then adding plug-ins. The link was:
http://www.tecmint.com/install-nagios-in-linux/
I had first gotten stuck on step 3, which was: Download Nagios Core 4.0.1 and Nagios Plugin 1.5.
Eventually I gave up trying to do it and looked more towards installing X11 forwarding, which I assumed to be the GUI which would basically make it no more codes and just make it into clicking and dragging. Tom had told me that my problem was that I didn't believe that the world of Linux Servers is mainly just codes. Sadly, he is right.
Eventually I basically gave up and Tom had to help me. The problem with installing the Core of Nagios was only a dash, because the version of Linux running on the desktop that I am using doesn't use a dash for that certain command in Terminal. Who would have thought that only a dash would make that much of a difference.
Once the part three was solved, the rest was just a breeze.
Just because it was a breeze doesn't mean there wasn't a problem at the end. After completing the installation, the error that occurred was connecting to the Nagios Web interface. Long story short, the assumed problem was due to a firewall issue. The official answer will be answered in the next post.... or not... who knows.
So far, this was good progress. In a weird way I actually enjoyed it, even though it was a bit annoying. Stay tuned for the next post.
ENJOY!!
